Illnesses

Please do not send a sick child to school for the nurse to decide whether s/he should be in school. If in doubt, please call your family physician.

First aid and medical care provided by the school nurse is mainly for illnesses or injuries that occur at school during the school day. The Health Office is not a primary care facility like a doctor's office. The nurse is qualified to collaborate with you and your child's physician to provide an educational environment in which your child can learn and thrive. The school nurse does not make medical diagnoses or prescribe treatments or medications. The school nurse can provide treatments and administer medications that are prescribed by a physician, as long as the proper documentation is completed by the physician and a written doctor's order is received.

If a student feels ill during the school day, they should report their complaint to their classroom teacher and receive a pass to the nurse. Students are not to contact their parents directly via cell phone regarding their illness unless they have received prior approval from the nurse.

Any student with a temperature of 100* or more will be sent home. ** Children must be free of fever (temperature below 100*), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours without the use of medications, regardless of how they feel, before returning to school.**

If your child presents to the Health Center with ANY symptoms of COVID-19, per county health guidelines, s/he will be sent home and required to stay home for 14 days. See COVID-19 page for additional details.
